You know how it goes.

Everything is all fine and dandy and then this one special starts a trend that gets everyone in a tizzy and life as you know it has not only been forever changed, but if you try to participate in the jump up, it will cost you. Dearly.

It’s no different with skin care.

‘Anti-aging’ skin care uses a combination of ingredients to assist in repairing and/or restoring temporarily ‘damaged’ the skin back to a more ‘normal’ state, or ‘aged’ skin to… skin that is “less aged” in appearance.

In all honesty, accelerated aging of the skin occurs when the skin becomes:

- Irritated,
- Inflamed and/ or
- Dehydrated

so with this definition in mind, in addition to all the factors that were discussed in an earlier post, using products that were not formulated for your skin type, products that are overly drying or stripping of the skin’s oil and water levels, or not using any skin care at all – can all accelerate the aging process.

In addition to protecting the against the damaging of free radical action on the skin by the use of antioxidants, another way to slow down the signs of aging is to stimulate collagen production, the main protein of connective tissue that is exclusively found in animals in nature.

How is this done? One word, Peptides.

Peptides are usually really long compound words that end in ‘ide’, and are created in labs. For example, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide (both 3 and 5), are pretty popular.

The purpose of peptides in ‘anti-aging’ skin care products is to simulate the skin tissue’s regenerating process, and assist with quicker wound healing, and various levels of collagen production that would result in the appearence of less wrinkles, less sagging, and a thicker layer of the true skin, which is the layer of skin that is just under the superficial layer (the layer that we deal with – wash, moisturize etc).

Peptides are the new ‘it’ kids on the block.

Everyone one is talking about them, and so like the most coveted shoes, they come with a high price tag attached to them whenever they are included in a product. However, if you want to up the ante on your skin care regimen as you are gunning up that proverbial hill, and you are looking toward a non-invasive product to help you with that, they are your best bet. Gotta pay the cost to look like you’re still the boss.

Although they do function similarly, they often do not leave the skin as inflammed as it may appear after the use of Retinol.

Ingredients, Ingredients, Ingredients

In addition to peptides, other ingredients that stimulate the production of collagen are

- Retinol (Vitamin A)

- Ascorbic Acid (Vitmain C)

- Soy Isoflavonids

- Glucosamine and

- Yeast Extract
